A2L Refrigerant Safety Training - What Every HVAC Tech Needs

A2L refrigerants (R-454B, R-32, R-1234yf, R-452B) are classified by ASHRAE Standard 34 as mildly flammable with low burning velocity. They won't ignite as easily as propane, but they can burn - and the working temperatures and pressures of a service situation can put you in the ignition envelope if you're not careful.

Your existing 608 still covers you

EPA did NOT require technicians to re-certify for A2L work. Your Section 608 (Type I/II/III/Universal) or 609 certification is still valid for recovering, charging, and servicing A2L systems.

However, you should complete supplemental A2L safety training - typically required by your OEM distributor, your state code, and your liability insurance.

What A2L training covers

• →Lower Flammability Limit (LFL) and burning velocity - why A2L is 'mild'
• →Maximum refrigerant charge calculations (UL 60335-2-40 / ASHRAE 15)
• →Ignition sources in service - open flames, hot surfaces, electrical arcing
• →Leak response procedures - ventilation first, ignition source removal
• →Equipment requirements: A2L-rated recovery, leak detectors, tools
• →Proper cylinder storage and transport (A2L cylinders are labeled differently)
• →Code requirements for installation spaces (minimum room sizes, ventilation)

Where to get it

Most major OEMs (Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Daikin, Mitsubishi) offer 4–8 hour A2L training modules. HVAC Excellence, ESCO, and RSES all offer independent A2L courses. Typical cost: $100–$400 per technician. Many distributors offer free training with equipment purchases.
