R-454B (Honeywell Solstice 454B) is the next-generation A2L refrigerant replacing R-410A in new residential split systems, heat pumps and light-commercial HVAC under the EPA's SNAP transition rules. With a GWP of 466 - 78% lower than R-410A - it is one of the lowest-GWP options approved for direct-expansion comfort cooling. Classified A2L under ASHRAE 34 (mildly flammable), R-454B must only be installed and serviced in equipment that is specifically A2L-rated. No. R-454B cannot be used as a drop-in for R-410A. A2L refrigerants require equipment designed for them - using R-454B in R-410A equipment voids warranties and violates safety codes.
Your existing EPA Section 608 certification authorizes you to handle A2L refrigerants. However, you must complete the supplemental A2L safety training (40–50 hours typical) and use A2L-rated recovery equipment.
R-454B is supply-constrained across North America as OEMs have migrated virtually all new 2025+ units to it. Limited manufacturing capacity drives premium pricing; we maintain stock directly from Honeywell.
R-454B is classified A2L - mildly flammable with low burning velocity. Handle per ASHRAE 15 / UL 60335-2-40 guidelines and use only equipment rated for A2L.
