What is R-410A?

R-410A is a 50/50 azeotropic blend of R-32 (difluoromethane) and R-125 (pentafluoroethane). Introduced in the late 1990s as a replacement for R-22, it operates at higher pressures than R-22 (around 400 psi suction-side typical) and requires equipment specifically rated for it. It is non-flammable (ASHRAE Safety Class A1), has zero ozone depletion potential, and a global warming potential of 2,088 — high enough that the AIM Act is phasing it down for new equipment manufacturing on a stepped schedule through 2036.

Why R-410A is still legal to buy

The AIM Act (American Innovation and Manufacturing Act, 2020) phases down HFC manufacturing — not service. Tens of millions of US homes are running R-410A systems installed between 2006 and 2025; those systems will need recharging for 15+ more years. Federal regulations explicitly preserve the right to service and recharge existing R-410A equipment. Selling virgin R-410A to EPA Section 608 certified technicians for service work is fully legal under 40 CFR Part 82.

Common R-410A applications

Residential split systems (90%+ of US central air installed 2006-2025), heat pumps in moderate climates, mini-split / multi-split systems, packaged rooftop units up to about 25 tons, light commercial refrigeration, and aftermarket replacement on heat pumps that originally shipped with R-407C. R-410A is the default choice for any service tech recharging a residential AC under 5 tons.

What replaces R-410A in new equipment

As of January 1 2025, new residential AC + heat pump equipment manufactured in the US must use a refrigerant with a GWP under 700. The two market leaders are R-454B (Honeywell Solstice 454B, GWP 466) and R-32 (Daikin's preference, GWP 675). Both are A2L mildly flammable and require updated charging procedures. R-410A remains 100% serviceable on existing equipment — you don't retrofit R-410A systems to R-454B; you keep recharging them with R-410A until they're replaced wholesale.

What we ship

100% virgin R-410A from Honeywell-authorized fillers. AHRI-700 purity certified. Factory-sealed 25 lb steel cylinder with 1/4" SAE flare service port. DOT-39 compliant for non-refillable cylinder shipment. We never sell reclaimed, recovered, or blended-down product. Every cylinder ships with a manufacturer purity certificate available on request, and we hold third-party-verified AHRI-700 lab reports we'll forward to your purchasing department for compliance audits.

Frequently asked: R-410A

Is R-410A still legal to buy in 2026?

Yes. R-410A is fully legal to buy and use for servicing existing equipment. The AIM Act only phases down manufacturing of new R-410A equipment, not service refrigerant. EPA Section 608 certification is required to purchase and handle any HFC refrigerant including R-410A.

How much does R-410A cost per pound?

Our 25 lb cylinders work out to roughly $9.60/lb at 1-cylinder pricing, dropping to $9.40/lb at 20 cylinders and $9.20/lb at 40+. Pricing fluctuates with manufacturer index — check the product page for the current locked-in rate.

Can I retrofit a R-22 system to R-410A?

No. R-410A operates at significantly higher pressures than R-22 and uses different lubricant (POE oil vs mineral oil). Components — compressor, expansion device, lineset insulation — are not pressure-rated for R-410A. Retrofit drop-in replacements like MO99 / R-407C exist for R-22 systems; R-410A is not one of them.

Do you sell R-410A to homeowners?

No. EPA Section 608 certification is required by federal law (40 CFR §82.154) to purchase any HFC refrigerant. Our checkout enforces this — every order requires a valid 608 cert number on file. If you're not certified, the AC technician servicing your equipment is, and we sell to them.
