R-404A Replacement Options for Commercial Refrigeration
R-404A is being phased down globally. Compare R-448A (Solstice N40), R-449A, and R-452A for supermarket, cold storage, and transport refrigeration retrofits.

R-404A (GWP 3,922) is one of the highest-GWP refrigerants still in widespread use in commercial refrigeration - supermarkets, walk-in freezers, transport refrigeration, ice machines. It's been the industry standard for decades, and it's being phased down aggressively.
R-404A phase-down status
Under EPA SNAP and the AIM Act, R-404A is restricted for new installations in most categories. Existing systems can still be serviced, but supply is tightening. Most supermarket chains are actively retrofitting.
Replacement options compared
The three HFO/HFC blends that dominate R-404A retrofits:
- R-448A (Honeywell Solstice N40): GWP 1,387. Highest adoption for supermarkets. Drop-in style with minor expansion valve adjustment.
- R-449A (Opteon XP40): GWP 1,397. Similar performance to R-448A. DuPont/Chemours product.
- R-452A (Opteon XP44): GWP 2,141. Primarily for transport refrigeration; lower GWP than R-404A but less than 448A/449A.
What to swap
Retrofit workflow typically includes recovering the R-404A, changing the oil if the original was mineral (these HFO blends require POE), replacing the filter drier, and adjusting the TXV. No compressor replacement usually required.
Which to pick for a Houston supermarket
For new installations or major retrofits in supermarket chains: R-448A. It has the widest OEM support, the most documented field performance, and is widely available from major distributors. For transport fleets where lower pressure matters: R-452A.
